“EMDR gives the brain a second chance to reprocess the traumatic memory, thus transforming it into an adaptive resolution.”

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

  • What is EMDR?

EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a evidence based therapy method known for its effectiveness in helping individuals individuals recover from traumatic memories, trauma, PTSD, dissociative disorders, anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), chronic pain, addictions, and phobias.

  • How does it work?

EMDR uses a technique called bilateral stimulation, often in the form of eye movements, which serves to engage both hemispheres of the brain. In a session, therapists guide individuals to focus on traumatic memories while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation. Research shows this process is linked to a reduction in the intensity of emotions and vividness associated with those traumatic memories.

Clients work on identifying and addressing maladaptive beliefs, emotions, and sensations tied to the targeted memory. As therapy progresses, the distress associated with those memories typically diminish, and empowers clients to develop more adaptive coping skills, gain valuable insights, and foster healthier beliefs.

  • What does EMDR treat?

EMDR has been shown to be effective for children, teenagers, and adults of all ages in treating:

    -Anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias
    -Chronic Illness and medical issues
    -Depression and bipolar disorders
    -Dissociative disorders
