The Healing Power of Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

  • What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy?

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy pairs this medicinal experience with psychotherapy helping clients integrate the insights they gained during ketamine sessions. This is, in fact, the most essential part of KAP, as it supports the strengthening of neuroplasticity while the brain learns new ways of processing information.

Whereas other medicine-based treatments, such as IV ketamine, offer transient relief, KAP offers the advantage of ongoing support from a trained mental health professional who can facilitate healing, skills building, and integration.

  • What is Ketamine?

Initially employed primarily as an anesthetic agent within medical contexts, ketamine has exhibited promise in addressing various mental health conditions, particularly depression and PTSD.

It acts as a catalyst to fostering deeper therapeutic engagement, enabling clients to confront and process emotions, memories, and traumas previously obscured or inaccessible.

It has rapidly acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects which can begin to take effect within hours after treatment, & lasting for several weeks as well as been shown to enhance neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement.

  • What does Ketamine feel like?

Ketamine’s effects last for approximately 45-60 minutes. These effects can make you feel distant from your body and help provide shifts in awareness that can often feel wide-reaching in nature.

Your motor and verbal abilities will be reduced, so you’ll be lying down in a comfortable position during the experience. Once these effects subsided, we’ll spend the remainder of our appointment giving you space to process and discuss your experience.

While it may feel hard to articulate what happened during the experience, patients feel like the insights gained are none-the-less clear.

  • What to expect in a KAP session?

The KAP session can be in person at our office, providing privacy and comfort for the session, or via telehealth the comfort of your home. Robert, a licensed mental health professional certified in ketamine therapy, will instruct you to administer the ketamine lozenge and swish for 12 minutes, which is carefully monitored throughout the experience.

The individual receiving treatment engages in psychotherapy during and after the ketamine session, allowing them to explore and process their thoughts, emotions, and experiences.

After your KAP session, you will have a follow up integration session with Robert. The integration session helps stabilize the changes experienced through the medicine.

  • Who may not be eligible for KAP?

    Individuals that:
    - Are pregnant
    - Have uncontrolled hypertension
    - Have acute cardiovascular disease
    - Had a previous negative response to ketamine
    - Have a history of psychosis

  • Initial evaluation with Journey Clinical

Robert will refer you to Journey Clinical to schedule you for the medical evaluation via zoom. They will go over your medical & psychiatric history, provide education on the treatment, and determine if you are eligible for KAP. If you are eligible for KAP, they will develop a personalized Ketamine prescription and outcome monitoring plan for you.

Journey Clinical’s medical staff will write a ketamine prescription for your first two KAP sessions and it will be sent to your home. You will be taught to take your vitals and self-administer the ketamine lozenges by Journey Clinical’s medical team in advance of your KAP sessions.

  • Preparation Sessions with Robert

Once you receive your prescription, you will schedule two preparation sessions. dosing and integration sessions. Preparation sessions are 1 hour long each. The goal of preparation sessions is to align with Robert on the process and set intentions for your KAP sessions.

  • KAP Dosing Session

A ketamine dosing session lasts approximately 3 hours long and can take place either in-person at Robert’s office or remotely via telehealth.

During a dosing session, you will self-administer your ketamine lozenge. You will be in a comfortable, reclining position wearing an eye mask and listening to calming music.

Although a KAP dosing session may be largely an internal experience, Robert will be present with you the entire time to hold space and provide support as needed.

  • Integration Session

1-4 days after your KAP dosing session, you will meet for an hour long integration therapy session to review the memories, thoughts & insights that arose during your dosing session, and to prepare for the next dosing session.

  • Follow-up with Journey Clinical:

After your first KAP session, Journey Clinical’s medical team schedules regular follow ups with you to monitor outcomes and prescribe ketamine lozenge refills, as appropriate.

The frequency of follow ups depends on your unique treatment plan, at a minimum of once per quarter.
